Ain't no mountain high enough

Monday saw the first 'Walks & Talks' take place led by Thursday Gardening Group's Dave Merrick. On completion the group had walked 6.7miles, up an undulating elevation of 232 metres. They were blessed with the weather and Dave has kindly written a full account of the walk below. We hope to enjoy more of these, especially during the winter months when the demands of the acre decrease. If you would like to host a walk please email us at info@space2grow.space

Pizza - coming to you soon!

The unstoppable Men in Sheds team are doing a fantastic job with the pizza oven. The Dome is carefully being constructed and is looking like a fabulous feature next to the pond ( - the dome currently looking like a small scale mountain for the walkers to climb!) If you would like to get involved with the decorating of the Dome or have any ideas please let us know.
The pond decking is also progressing well - this really is going to become such a treasured area of the acre. Not long now!

Going potty

Natalie's Friday team did a fantastic job in going through all the pots and storing them for future use. There was definitely a point where it looked like it was getting worse before it got better! Great to be getting everything in ship shape as we head into the winter. On Wednesday the area under the fruit trees had a very good weed (huge thanks to Izzy) and it's looking in great shape which is good news as there's a pruning lesson to be coming to the acre soon...

Reflections - A walk to Caesar's Camp

Constant rain on Sunday did not bode well for the inaugural space2grow walk due to start the next day. As the saying goes “The sun shines on the righteous”, and our group of walkers must be very well regarded as the sky cleared and the sun shone uninterrupted during the walk.

The start point was the space2grow acre, where we made our way to Farnham Park via Farnham Castle. The group then followed the wide and spectacular tree lined avenue that stretches 1km West to East across the park from the Castle (discussions on when and why this avenue was created took place – further Googling presents scant detail, the earliest recording of a double avenue trees was in a plan dated 1768, the trees were replanted in the mid-1900s due to Dutch Elm disease).

A circular route was followed to one of the many southern entrances to Caesar’s Camp, part of Farnham park in the 13th century, and is the location of an Iron Age fort which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument covering 26 acres. Carrying on to a central high plateau in the Camp took the group through steep undulating, wooded and open countryside. After an initial climb to the first crest the group emerged from woodland, and a group “WOW!” was heard as the view to the plateau and surrounding views came into sight. For the walk organiser this was a very satisfying result.

Lunch, refreshments and rest were taken once the plateau was reached, whilst everyone took in the panoramic views of surrounding towns, the North Downs and even the London skyline on the horizon. You really get a feel for how green and wooded the surrounding areas are when viewing from the high point in Caesars Camp.

The group then returned to the acre via a slightly different route. The group walked 6.7miles and centuries of history discussed. It was pleasing to see everyone being positive throughout, joining in with the many discussions and enjoying the day. Special mention for the senior members of the walk Gerard and his wife Marianne, who obviously keep themselves remarkably fit and completed the walk with the group from start to finish.

Everyone is looking forward to future walks and further discoveries. - Dave Merrick.

Yoga with Isobel - There are still a few yoga spots free and Lara sent us this lovely photo of Isobel along with the message that 'The word Yoga can scare people. It's not about the perfect posture or standing on your head. We had a lovely hour stretching, balancing and being with ourselves.'

If you'd like to give it a try just get in touch with Isobel directly isobel@roots-yoga.co.uk and reserve your spot!

We've plenty to do in the acre before winter sets in so please come along to get the most out of the autumnal days ahead. Don't forget that we are offering additional days to get involved and have spaces available, especially on Friday, so to book a space contact info@space2grow.space We would love to have you join us.

Keep in touch and we hope to see you on the acre soon.

And finally below is a picture of a bumper squash. Gerard thinks it's a hybrid of varieties; whatever it's name it's certainly thrived on the space and grew!
