the Queen's Green Canopy
Rain and chilly weather didn't stop a group of our garden volunteers getting involved in planting a Liquid Amber tree as part of the Queen's Green Canopy tree planting initiative to celebrate her Platinum jubilee year. The Farnham Town Council event was visited by a representative of the Queen from the Armed Forces.
our pond needs you!
After much amazing hard work from our volunteers we've now reached the point where our new, extra strength pond liner can be installed. As extra strength means extra heavy (around 250kg which took some work to get to the acre!) we're in need of able volunteers to help us put it in place. If you can come along from 10am on Monday 21st March and help us with the task we'll reward you with a barbecue lunch!
an award from Jeremy Hunt
Local MP Jeremy Hunt and Tindle Newspapers hosted an awards reception to recognise South West Surrey's Covid heroes, celebrating people who went the extra mile to support their neighbours and community through the Covid-19 pandemic. We were delighted and humbled to be among the wonderful people receiving awards for our work in keeping space2grow open and welcoming during the pandemic.
support Farnham in Bloom
Ever wondered how the green team at Farnham Town Council put together the beautiful displays of thousands of plants every year for Farnham in Bloom? It all starts with thousands of tiny plug plants that will be arriving in the Council polytunnels in the next few weeks and they all need to be planted! Do let us know if you'd like to spend some time helping out with the planting as we're organising a group of volunteers to lend support and get planting! This will take place during one of our regular Monday or Friday sessions during April. More details to come.
in our garden
Lots of activity in the space2grow garden with fruit trees planted, a donated conifer tree planted, plenty of weeding and maintenance to keep our lovely volunteers busy.
We were amazed and proud to see the wonderful work our volunteers put in to create a willow fence to support the stream banks. We think it looks amazing!
reflections from the acre
Nathan is a regular volunteer in our garden and also volunteers for our neighbouring partner organisation The Bishop's Meadow Trust. Here are his reflections.......
I was introduced to space2grow by Voluntary Action South West Surrey just over two years ago. The best parts for me are meeting new people, getting new ideas and the work (although that can sometimes be difficult for me). I always seem to learn new things each time I come to space2grow, about gardening or life in general. Being part of something that’s much bigger than yourself is important. I’ve really been enjoying it. I’m quite happy working on my own which I do often when I volunteer for the Bishop’s Meadow Trust just across the stream from space2grow. It’s always great to work with other people and have a chat which is what I like so much about space2grow.
Emotionally it’s been very good for me. The feeling of doing something worthwhile after having many years where I’ve been in and out of hospital and haven’t been able to get as involved as I’d like is great. I wish I’d found space2grow sooner! Through 2019 I had a health scare and so didn’t want to start anything until I had been given the all clear. When I was introduced to space2grow and I got stuck into it straight away. Every time my life seems to be going in one direction fate moves the goal posts because after a couple of months the pandemic started. I made sure I came back after the restrictions were lifted and I’ve really been enjoying it. Last week I got involved in the Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting with a group from the acre. I was able to chat to the Queen’s representative who was a Colonel in my old army regiment – the Princess of Wales regiment. You never know who you’re going to meet when you join the community at space2grow!
If you would like to share what the acre means to you please email info@space2grow.space - we love hearing everyones reflections.
As always, we are working hard to ensure that space2grow remains a Covid safe site so please email info@space2grow.space prior to your visits, bring your own food and drink, take any rubbish home and please adhere to social distancing.
Thank you and see you soon!
