Cooking up a storm

Cookery Classes

Wednesday saw the return of different smells wafting out of the cabin as the cookery courses were underway. The team from Transform had their third week and also shared some of their home efforts of the bread they baked when they got home. Six families from Potters Gate Primary School made chicken and mushroom pie and the smells and delight from the cabin were lovely on a dull November day.

Gardening update

After the fantastic job of clearing the perimeter path behind the maze, the Thursday group worked on creating a more secluded boundary to the acre at the top corner where the new Bodgers area is to be formed. It's great to be able to use what we have on site to upgrade our space and this project allows us to slowly reshape the very old compost pile which was a bit of an eye sore. Natalie's Friday group have also spotted lots of areas to continue the perimeter path, allowing us to use all of the acre.

The team have been working hard over the last few weeks on several fronts including starting work on a storage unit for Hale Community Centre using reclaimed materials. The pizza oven is also taking shape and is being ' fired' to dry the clay mould which is taking longer than expected due to the damp conditions. Bridge builders, bench makers, gate constructors, furniture renovators, decking makers...a very talented team!

Reflections from the acreIt's lovely to be able to capture people's experiences on the acre and this week, Coral Turan, who runs our Cooking Club kindly shared her thoughts...

'When I arrive at the acre, Jon (the Superstar) has already set up the hobs ready for our day of cookery. Sometimes people arrive looking dubious, not knowing what to expect, but soon there is banter and the enjoyment of cooking a healthy meal together. People begin sharing stories of their cooking adventures and asking questions and the magic of the acre starts. As they cook parents begin to talk to each other, making connections. One mum, who returned for a second term with a different sibling, said that she had made new friendships which are still continuing, even in lockdown. Another said how much her children loved the spaghetti bolognese and how they were eating foods they wouldn't normally eat, because they had cooked them themselves. At the end they have a few minutes to look around the acre before they run off with their food parcels to take home for tea and everyone leaves smiling, with a home cooked meal and great conversations to remember.

If you would like to share what the acre means to you please email info@space2grow.space - we love hearing everyones reflections.

More Volunteering Opportunities

Finally our friends at The Maltings have launched a new project called Wrap up Farnham. This new initiative for the town gathers unwanted or unused coats from the people of Farnham and distributes them to those in need. They are accepting donations next week; time to rummage out those unwanted coats at the back of the cupboards! It's a fabulous cause to help those that have little at this time of year. To find out more on how you can help and when to give your donation please click HERE.

And as always, we are trying to ensure that space2grow remains a Covid safe site so please email info@space2grow.space prior to your visits, bring your own food and drink, take any rubbish home and please adhere to social distancing.

Thank you and see you soon!
