therapeutic yoga
A few words from Isobel about the yoga sessions; ‘We have completed our first couple of months of yoga in the beautiful Talking Shed on the acre. I would like to thank everybody who attended – you were all so brave for joining something new and for creating a brilliant couple of groups. The best news a teacher can hear is that the practice is benefiting a student in some part of their life – whether it is mentally, physically or emotionally. The feedback I have received has been lovely and I am so happy whenever yoga makes a change, no matter how small, in someone’s life. I hope very much that we can continue to grow your practice and these changes simultaneously.
For those that are curious about yoga but not sure if they want to try it, here is a quick summary of what my attitude to yoga is as every teacher’s will be different: my teachings of yoga are from a very therapeutic perspective. I began yoga to heal my own body and mind after years of being unwell. Yoga along with gardening are the two things I give credit for completely changing my life into a positive one. On the acre I teach gentle Hatha and when restrictions ease one day we can start to include Restorative which is hugely beneficial for the nervous system. All levels and all ages are welcome. I am one of those teachers who believes that anyone can practice yoga, it is all about finding the right style and right modification that works for your body right here, right now. Even if you turn up to class and just don’t feel up to moving through a routine, just lying on the mat in Savasana is sometimes all you need to turn a bad day into a good one.
I will be back on the 12th January with the two same classes, 1:30-2:30pm and 3-4pm, every Tuesday. Spaces will still be limited to five for the time being but feel free to reach out for more information, isobel@roots-yoga.co.uk’
garden update - Inspired by Lara's wreath the gardeners created a Christmas star using willow and foliage. What looks like a simple pile of earth is actually a labour of love to create a bank to protect from the calvert flooding and to define the new Bodger's work area.
shed creation - Exciting times for Men in Sheds as their new shed has arrived! Work on the foundations has begun and they plan to be working away in their new space early in 2021.
The men have created and delivered an outdoor wooden storage community cupboard for Hale Community Centre as part of their 'Fridge and Cupboard' food-waste reduction scheme. A fantastic scheme which is open to all to donate, share and swap food items, reducing waste and, importantly, giving vital access to those in need over the Christmas period.
reflections from the acre - In this week's reflections from the acre Isobel shares her thoughts....
"I was asked to come along to the acre when there was just a small group of us. We spent our Wednesday mornings doing lots of digging and bonfires and I soon went from feeling incredibly nervous to feeling at home with the group and the garden itself. It has always been ‘the secret garden’ – a little patch of safety in the middle of a town, whether it is an out of control wilderness with a lot of brambles to cut or a maintained flower bed. What is lovely is that it is a garden like no other because we all make our mark in it, making it unique. Everything and everyone is welcome at space2grow!
Gardening, especially growing veg and fruit, has played a huge therapeutic role in my life for the last eight years and to be able to share it with other people turned out to be just what I needed. It has been incredible to watch not only the acre itself transform but to see the people change too. I believed in the benefits of gardening for mental health after experiencing it myself but to see how happy it made other people was the thing that made me decide to train in horticultural therapy and plenty more therapies after that! I never would have gone down this path if it was not for space2grow. This acre helped to bring me out of my shell, to make friends, to add purpose to my life. I am forever grateful for those who introduced me to the acre and continue to welcome and support everyone today."
