bodging on the acre
An insight into bodging at space2grow from volunteer John... "Trevor, who leads the bodger group, is a highly skilled tradesman and has taught me about the skills of bodging and other unique techniques. Many of these old style skills involving work with wood, leather, bone and other materials are once again becoming popular. In a modern society it also emphasises the importance of up-cycling and gaining as much use out of old and modern tools and materials, both manmade and natural. Virtually nothing goes to waste, although we try to use natural materials where possible."
in the garden
We're lucky to have a wide age range of volunteers and it's great to see gardening knowledge being passed on to younger generations. Our octogenerian veg growing expert Gerrard definitely knows his onions!
It's the time of year when parts of the acre are in full bloom and others are planted ready for growth. We're looking forward to the wildflower meadow and the new wildflower area around the pond blooming in the coming weeks.
Work, rest and re-use in action at space2grow. Turning old newspapers into origami seed planters. Quite satisfying to make and they can be planted in the ground, plastic free.
Thank you to Gracie from 40 Degreez for sending us this lovely photo of spring blossom on the acre.
The Hale Community Centre Food Cupboard crafted by men in sheds, our collaboration with Farnham Maltings, is being put to great use. If you missed it last week click here to see the Farnham Herald article on our website.
coming up
space2grow is open this bank holiday Monday and every weekend and bank holiday over the summer. Please book in if you would like to come down and maybe introduce friends and family to the acre for a summer picnic in the fresh air or just to spend some quite time in nature.
reflections from the acre
Volunteer John shares his thoughts on spending time at space2grow....
"For me, space2grow has started to feel more and more like a second home. When you come down to the acre the only thing you have to contend with is open space and friendly people or space to be left alone if that’s what you feel like. There are always nice people to talk to and, if you feel like talking, there are always those willing to listen and offer help and advice.
It is nice to be outdoors with nature especially when I can find it very hard to leave the house. Once I get going everything becomes relatively easier but the first step can be very, very hard. Although my epilepsy is a disadvantage, I have never felt excluded due to it and in fact things are well thought out and put into place, keeping me safe and included in as many different activities as possible.
Covid has been a hard time for all and others like me should take solace in the kind people and opportunities at space2grow. If you are considering getting involved, I recommend you get in touch with the lovely and kind Kate to see what can be arranged to make you part of the team. It doesn’t matter if you’re starting volunteering, looking to learn new skills or pass skills and experiences on to others, there are always new things to learn and experience down on the acre."
If you would like to share what the acre means to you please email info@space2grow.space - we love hearing everyones reflections.
Like so many things in life all of the activities we provide for the local community cost money. If you are able to make a donation, however big or small please click this link to donate. https://www.space2grow.space/donate-1
As always, we are working hard to ensure that space2grow remains a Covid safe site so please email info@space2grow.space prior to your visits, bring your own food and drink, take any rubbish home and please adhere to social distancing.
