just pond-ering
Following much pondering on the best approach to maximise the depth of our lovely pond our intrepid young volunteers ventured into the icy water in waders which turned out to be riddled with holes!
Adhering to our ethos of re-use and recycling old tarpaulins and donated blankets were used to create sandbags to increase the height of the pond edges.
The youngsters defrosted in the sunshine and under blankets after a chilly mornings work which puts us on track to have a beautiful pond, brimming with plants and wildlife ready for the official launch of the decking on May 1st. With the pond liner purchased from one of our early donations from the NHS Surrey Borders Partnership, the decking purchased from a donation from Farnham Mayor Pat Evans, construction by our resident men in sheds team, and the hard work from our volunteers throughout, this has been a fantastic example of a community build project.
reflections from the acre
In this week's reflections Reuben, one of our young 'ponderers', shares his thoughts....
"This week we have sorted out the pond liner to maximise the possible pond depth, which was a chilly yet rewarding job - definitely earning a cup of tea or two!
I have seen the acre develop and grow over time, and helping out with bits and bobs along the way has been my pleasure. Regardless of freezing ponds or spiky hawthorns, it's always a joy to work and talk with the people who come along, and there’s nothing like picking a fresh strawberry to eat here and there!
As a young person, I have had countless conversations with various volunteers that have given me profound insights to their lives and stories. That space to sit and listen to people and hear life from their perspective is a rare opportunity I think more young people should have the chance to do, as it is so interesting.
There are many happy memories I have at space2grow, and look forward to many more."
